HEATING:-

It pays to think carefully about your heating needs.  You may have a warm room in the house or access to a hot water system that are sources of heat you are already paying for!!!  Most yeast function happily between 18ºC and 28ºC.  Cold ferment yeast function at 10ºC to 14ºC.
If you are brewing in an area that is less than 10ºC or fluctuates a lot then you will need the immersion heater.  These are thermostatically controlled and a permanent attachment to your lid so must be handled with care and cleaned properly every time.  If these are out of the brew they must be turned off and cooled for at least 20mins before reinserting.
If your brewing area is a stable 10ºC to 14ºC, like a cellar or under the house, you can quite easily use a belt heater.  They will keep the brew at 10ºC above ambient or can be wiggled up the barrel to drop the temperature.  They are outside the brew so do not have to be cleaned, only draw 25W, can be dropped or hung up when not in use and are my personal favourite!!
If you have two identical barrels you can:
a)  Get an immersion heater fitted to one lid, start the first brew.  Then swap the lids over after 5 days and start the second barrel.  Bottle two brews after three weeks.
b)  Use the belt heater and stagger your brewing.
c)  Get a heating panel and place it between the two brews or in a cupboard.  This has the advantage of heating an area so if your bottles are not warm enough they can go in there too!!!

BOTTLES:-

We stock brown plastic 740ml P.E.T. bottles with a reusable lid.  They are $16.50 per box of 15.  You need 2 boxes per batch.
These are great for traveling and ideal on boats and camping.  They also have the advantage where the sediment magically stays in the indents in the bottom of the bottle rather than a flat bottom glass beer bottle where the sediment slides down and ends up in your glass.

If you collect stubbies (x 67) or longnecks (x 33) with the twist off lids, you need to have a superautomatica capper ($43.90).  The wooden handle bang on capper is too severe, unless you rig it up in a drill press.  I know of a guy who built one from an orange juicer from Chickenfeed for about $15.  The two handle capper rips the necks off the bottles, we gave up selling them in 1995.

Occasionally we get in the old style beer bottles.  They disappear very quickly.  You need to be on "the list", so if you want some let us know.  They sell for $10 per dozen.
